(before there can be a divine scheme there must be a divine conspiracy)
On a Friday afternoon amid a pleasing temperature of 67 degrees, a gentle steady breeze, and under an open blue sky, a very dark cold plan was about to be executed. An event so disturbing that its performance still haunts millions of people to this day, over half a century later.
It was November 22, 1963, at 12:30 PM local Dallas, Texas time when US President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was fatally shot in the head by assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. Within thirty minutes at 1:00 PM, Kennedy was officially pronounced dead at Parkland Memorial Hospital.
Just after 1:00 PM, White House press secretary Malcolm Kilduff approached Vice President Lyndon Baines Johnson and requested permission to announce the death of JFK to the press. Johnson’s response prophesied the thoughts of many for decades to come when he replied, “I think I had better get out of here … before you announce it. We don’t know whether this is a worldwide conspiracy, whether they are after me as well as they were after President Kennedy.”
Conspiracy. The word long since attached to one of the most popular presidents of the twentieth century. In fact, just six months after the shooting, Thomas Buchanan’s book entitled “Who Killed Kennedy?”, was published and has been credited as the first book to allege a conspiracy.
The number of conspiracies theories surrounding JFK is unknown. What is known is that most of the public does not hold to the notion that Oswald acted out on his own with no help from anyone else.
Divers conspiracy theories
Conspiracy theories, I am sure you have heard a few others in your day. Perhaps you have even started some of your own or perhaps you have fanned the flames of existing ones.
According to Time Magazine, the top 10 most enduring conspiracy theories include such titles as:
1. The JFK Assassination
2. The 9/11 Cover-Up
3. Aliens at Area 51
Divine conspiracy truth
However, not all conspiracies are theories. Many really do exist. Throughout the centuries, men have conspired on many schemes to create a world of their own choosing. Many schemes were sinister while others were much nobler, but was man the first to conspire?
Some say that Satan was the first to scheme of the newly fashioned earth. Some say that he conspired with the fallen angels to create a world under their dominion.
But a more reputable source tells us that neither man nor demon was the first to conspire and scheme upon the earth. The Bible tells us that a holy Trinity was fast at work, conspiring, scheming, creating.
Just listen to the Godhead as they conspire together in the opening chapter to the Bible:
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: (Genesis 1:26a)
Did you catch the use of the words “us” and “our” in the verse? A conspiracy requires the work of more than one person. Mark this verse down as it opens a whole world of intrigue for the rest of the Bible and the rest humanity. It presents the Divine conspiracy!
Divine conspiracy translated
There is a seldom understood concept with the word “God” as it is used in the Old Testament Hebrew. The word for God used in Genesis chapter one is in the plural form. A weaker translation could use the word “gods” but that would be erroneous and miss the concept entirely.
The Hebrew word for God is el-o-heem’ and it can be translated as gods in the normal sense but not as it is referring to the true God of the Bible. No, the writer of Genesis did not make a mistake. The use of the plural word employed to describe the singular God is entirely done on purpose for at least two reasons.
First, whenever the ancient Hebrews were faced with a concept that was so enormous that it escaped full comprehension, they wrote the word in the plural. It was known as the plural of extension or the plural intensive. Another plural of extension is found in the first chapter of Genesis. Can you find it? Well do not worry if you cannot, I will be covering it in another blog post.
The second reason for having a singular God written as a plural noun has nothing to do with the external quantity of God but rather the intrinsic quality of God. You see, the one God exists simultaneously as three persons. That is why people refer to Him as the triune God.
Get back
So, now getting back to God’s divine conspiracy. During the very first week of creation, we are privy to a plan enacted by the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. In verse 26, we read about the one God speaking with three voices (persons).
Additionally, the verb “said” is singular. This singularity confirms that God is one being. However, the phrases that follow, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness,” are plural. This means that the Trinity were speaking to each other in unison with one voice – a conspiracy!
By its broadest definition, a conspiracy means to act in harmony with others toward a common end. The Trinity was conspiring to make mankind in a unique way for a unique purpose. This conspiracy required a scheme. A scheme is a large-scale systematic plan and God’s plan for mankind is the largest of them all! So large, that the rest of the Bible is dedicated to laying it out before our very eyes.
