General Frost in the desert

General Frost vs. Hitler

In the midst of the Second World War, on June 22, 1941, Germany launched its invasion of the Soviet Union. This invasion was codenamed Operation Barbarossa. Adolf Hitler predicted a quick victory for his unified Nazi armed forces, but after initial success, the brutal campaign dragged on. The Operation was not a success and the patient (that being the Nazis) died. Could this be because of General Frost?

Operation Barbarossa failed due to strategic blunders, determined Soviet resistance, and harsh winter weather. Hitler did not anticipate a long campaign lasting into the winter, and therefore adequate preparations, such as the distribution of warm clothing and winterization of vehicles, were not made.

On November 27, 1941, Eduard Wagner, the Quartermaster General of the German Army, reported that “We are at the end of our resources in both personnel and material. We are about to be confronted with the dangers of deep winter.”

Russian Winter, sometimes personified as “General Frost”, is an aspect of the climate of Russia that has contributed to military failures of several invasions attempted upon the country.

Why would the Germans launch one of history’s greatest military attacks against a country like Russia as the winter was approaching? All the planning of the Nazi generals was futile when going up against General Frost. Hitler should have known better.

General Frost vs. others

There were other military leaders that got caught in the same trap. In the early 1700s, Charles XII of Sweeden invaded Russia. The Russians retreated, adopting a scorched-earth policy. That winter was the most brutal of the 18th century, so severe that General Frost reduced Charles’ 35,000 troops to 19,000 by the spring.

On June 24, 1812, Napoleon’s Grande Armée of 610,000 men invaded Russia, heading towards Moscow. Once again, the Russian army retreated before the French and burnt their crops and villages, denying the enemy their use. Napoleon’s army was ultimately reduced to 100,000.

In search of answers

A major oversight of Hitler and his generals was that they neglected to learn from the mistakes of the past. The devastating losses from the Swedes and the French should have given them ample warning. A warning they did not heed.

So, what happened? What is it that compels successful, powerful, and intelligent people to go on an offensive when they know full well that they should not?

General Frost allies with desert heat

To answer such a question, we must do some traveling. First, we must travel back in time by a little over 3,000 years. Second, we must travel geographically from a freezing cold Russian winter to a boiling hot Egyptian desert.

Most people are generally aware of the biblical story of Moses. His life adventures have been written about and studied extensively and major motion pictures have been made about him.

Moses was chosen by God to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt where they were harnessed as slaves. He was to lead them to a land flowing with milk and honey where they could build a great nation unto God.

Of course, slaves are not free to do as they please and Pharaoh was not about to release the Hebrews simply because one man commanded him to. No, God sent a wave of 10 separate plagues upon Pharaoh and his people until they were weakened and gave into Moses’ demand to let his people go.

Crossing paths

Pharaoh eventually conceded and provided Moses and his people with food, transportation, and great riches. Egypt’s king was a defeated man, and the Hebrews were free to leave. But this is where the story crosses paths with the Nazis.

Exodus 14:1-4

v. 1) And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
v. 2) Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, over against Baalzephon: before it shall ye encamp by the sea.
v. 3) For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in.
v. 4) And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will be honoured upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I am the LORD. And they did so.

A temptation

In this passage of Scripture, God is giving Moses a command to purposely turn from their current direction of escape from Egypt and to set up camp in a location that permits no escape from an attacking army.

God commanded that they make a retreat and turn aside to a location that was blocked by a large body of water too deep to cross. Additionally, they were commanded to set up camp in that location. That meant the children of Israel would unpack and pitch their tents there. If an invading arming should attack, the Hebrews would be defenseless.

God had a reason for this. He wanted Pharaoh to hear about the Hebrews’ dilemma and to think that they were in a state of confusion or as the Bible says, they were “entangled”. God was tempting Pharaoh to pursue Moses and his people.

Verse four clearly tells us why. God wanted Pharaoh and all the Egyptians to acknowledge Him as Lord over everything. You see, at the end of the 10 plagues, Egypt surrendered to Moses’ request to set the Hebrews free. However, Egypt still had not confessed the God of Moses to be Lord of all, but that was about to change.

General Frost

So, verse four says that God would “harden Pharaoh’s heart”. The word “harden” means to encourage and make strong. God created a boldness deep within Pharaoh. Once he discovered the Hebrews had trapped themselves by the Red Sea, he was encouraged to chase after them and finally put an end to all the children of Israel.

You would think that Pharaoh would know better, wouldn’t you? You would think that looking back upon previous encounters with Israel, he would cut his losses and just let them go. But a hardened heart does no such thing.

General Frost returns

This is what plagued Hitler. He could have erred on the side of caution and waited until after winter to continue his full-scale attack on the Soviets. However, Hitler had a hardened heart. He was convinced that his swift army could cut through General Frost and make mincemeat of the entire Soviet army. As a result of his confidence, he made a major blunder which became the turning point of the war.

God brings down evil men by tempting them with overconfidence and visions of grandeur. That is His way. In Europe, Hitler would soon be crushed; in Egypt Pharaoh would soon acknowledge the Hebrew God as Lord.

So what?

As for Israel, they would soon set out on a journey whereby they would trade the 10 plagues of Egypt for the 10 Commandments of God. These commandments would solidify a people unto their God and be the future principles for which many mighty nations would embrace. The 10 Commandments would also serve as a witness against mankind by exposing our sinful weaknesses before a holy God. But as they say, that is another story for another time.

General Frost

Suffice it is to know, that God has a divine scheme for the entire history of mankind. If you have been keeping count, we have looked at the following Crisis points:
Creation, Curse, Cataclysm, Confusion, Chosen, and now Commandments.
Each crisis has changed our history and directed us to the ultimate goal of God. Stay tuned.

Care to comment on this?

Have you noticed that God has a way of humbling people by tempting them with situations that feed into their vision of grandeur? Do you think that the 10 commandments that were eventually given to Moses were also a source of humility to anyone attempting to live up to them? Are we being taught by Scripture (and also through secular examples such as General Frost) that the best life is the life where we truly make God our Lord?
